How did Coca Cola enter India?
Coca Cola started trading in India in 1950. However, in 1977, they withdrew any operations from the country in protest of regulations and legislations by the Indian government.
Coca Cola was re-introduced in India on October 24, 1993. Coca Cola has a long history of conflict with the Indian Government. India had become independent in 1947, which meant that the country was determined to establish socialism. This was bad news for Coca Cola because it had very few sympathisers in the Indian Government.
Coca Cola managed to become entrenched in the Indian community before the Government could respond. India was too busy dealing with the first years of independence and had no time to deal with foreign businesses. Coca Cola took that as an opportunity to establish the brand in India and became successful in the Indian market. This established many conflicts between Coca Cola and India as the country was leaning more towards the left.
